Every day of liberation is etched into the memory of our people as a moment of pride, joy and victory. The successes achieved by the Azerbaijani Army during the Patriotic War, and every village and city liberated from occupation, embody our return to our ancestral lands, national unity and heroism.
October 15, 2020, is another remarkable date in this glorious history. On that day, the valiant Azerbaijani Army liberated a number of villages in the Fuzuli, Jabrayil and Khojavand districts, bringing our people the joy of another victory.
President Ilham Aliyev posted the following announcement on his official social media account about the course of the war:
“The valiant Azerbaijani Army has liberated Arish village in Fuzuli District, Doshulu village in Jabrayil District, and Edishe, Dudukchu, Edilli and Chiraguz villages in Khojavand District from occupation.”
Indeed, today marks the liberation anniversary of the villages we have just mentioned. Let us learn more about the villages whose names have become part of the history of the Patriotic War.
Arish village, Fuzuli District
Arish village is located at the foothills of the Karabakh mountain range. It was occupied by the Armenian armed forces in 1993. During the occupation, Armenian vandals devastated the village, reducing it to ruins.
Doshulu village, Jabrayil District
Doshulu is located in a foothill area. According to local accounts, two brothers named Doshu and Gaybay, who had once arrived from South Azerbaijan, settled in this area and founded the settlements that later became Doshulu and Shaybay. The name means “the village belonging to Doshu” or “the village of the people of Doshu.”
Edishe village, Khojavand District
Edishe village is situated in a foothill area of Khojavand District. It was occupied by the Armenian armed forces on October 2, 1992. During the occupation, Edishe was subjected to Armenian vandalism.
Dudukchu village, Khojavand District
Dudukchu village is part of the Edilli village administrative territorial district in Khojavand District.
Edilli village, Khojavand District
Edilli village is located within the administrative territorial district of the same name. During the Armenian occupation, historical monuments, cemeteries and residential houses belonging to Azerbaijanis were destroyed. Following the liberation of Edilli, mass graves containing the remains of Azerbaijanis were discovered in the village.
Chiraguz village, Khojavand District
Chiraguz is a village within the Chiraguz administrative territorial district. It remained under the occupation of the Armenian armed forces from October 2, 1992, until October 15, 2020. The village name is a variant of the toponyms Chiragli and Chiraglar, meaning “the village inhabited by the Chirag tribe” or “the village belonging to the Chirag people.”
Our lands, which had been under enemy occupation for nearly 30 years, are now free. All our destroyed settlements are being rebuilt and restored to their former glory. Life is returning to our liberated cities and villages.
Today, a new chapter is beginning in our liberated territories. Extensive reconstruction and development work is underway in our ancestral homelands, which we had long yearned to see again. Destroyed settlements are being rebuilt, roads are being constructed, infrastructure is being restored, and our villages are regaining their former appearance.
As part of the Great Return programme, our compatriots are returning to their native lands and beginning new lives in the homes of their ancestors. Families who once endured the hardships of forced displacement are now experiencing the joy of returning to their homes and their ancestral communities.
